    About Śabdayoga Blog author Jayaraman Mahadevan   सूत्रम्- sūtra   Etymology सूत्रम् = सूत्र+अच् sūtram = sūtra+ac The root here is Sūtra. The meaning of the root is   veṣṭane vimocane granthane ca (to put in thread, to release, to cover with thread) [1] To the above root - the suffix added is ac (erac - aṣṭādhyāyī 3.3.56). The meaning brought in by the suffix is karaṇa (instrumentality) . Hence, the meaning that emerges through the etymology is – that by which stringing is done - sūtryate aneneti sūtram.   Lexicon In the lexicon amarakośa we find the following reference on the term sūtra – sūtrāṇi nari tantavaḥ (2.10.28) sūtra (is a neuter form) and tantu is a masculine form (indicate thread).   Though the reference from this lexicon does not add anything new, the Sudhā commentary [2] to the above verse of amarakośa quotes hemacandra lexicon where it is stated – sūcanākārigranthe tantuvyasthayoḥ Sūtra refers to the text...

First the word Sarūpa is arrived at and from that the word sārūpyam is derived. समानं रूपं यस्य सः सरूप : samānaṃ rūpaṃ yasya saḥ sarūpaḥ The one who has a similar form is sarūpa   At the first level it is a compound where the word sarūpa is arrived at by combining the words   Samāna (similar/identical) and rūpa (form). They are combined as per the Bahuvrīhi compound rule तेन सहेति तुल्ययोगे tena saheti tulyayoge   ( aṣṭādhyāyī   2 . 2.28)   सरूप + ष्यञ् = सारूप्यम् sarūpa+ṣyañ = sārūpyam The suffix ṣyañ is added to the word sarūpa to denote the nature or attribute.     About Śabdayoga Blog author Jayaraman Mahadevan   साधन- Sādhana Etymology  साधनम् = षाध + ल्युट् Sādhanam = ṣādha + lyuṭ   In this word –  ·         Sādha  is the root – meaning - saṃsiddhi - to achieve well  ·         Lyut is the suffix that indicate instrumentality (by which). Lyut is added to the root by the rule 3.3.117 of Sage Panini in the text aṣṭādhyāyī.
